The avalanche that ran on the fourth of March is still here on the fourteenth of July. It sits at the bottom of a gully in the northern Bridger Range as a fan of gray, dirt-freighted snow the size of a strip-mall parking lot, sprouting fir branches like whiskers, sweating in the afternoon heat. Ruth Sandoval walks onto the debris without ceremony, kneels, and pulls out a tape measure. "Still eleven feet deep in the middle," she says, in the tone other people use for a stubborn houseguest. "It'll see September."

Sandoval, forty-four, is one of three avalanche forecasters at the regional center in Bozeman, and for five months a year she is a kind of weather oracle: up at four, buried in station data and field observations, publishing a forecast by seven that several thousand people use to decide where — and whether — to ski. The season ended, officially, in April. What civilians call the off-season, she calls fieldwork.

"People think we hibernate in reverse," she says, driving up Bridger Canyon with a dog named Pica asleep on the back seat and a chainsaw in the bed. "Winter is the performance. Summer is the rehearsal, the accounting, and the autopsy, all at the same time."

The autopsy

The March 4 slide is her case study this year. It broke four feet deep on a layer of sugary facets that formed during a cold, clear stretch in early December — a layer her center had been writing about, in tones of escalating exasperation, for three months. The third snowmobiler onto the slope triggered it. The crown ran eight hundred feet across the bowl; the rider was carried through timber and buried to his chest against an alder, dug out by his partners in six minutes. He mailed the center a gas-station gift card and a note Sandoval keeps pinned above her desk: You told us. We went anyway. Working on it.

In July, she maps what the snow wrote. The trim line — the crisp border where the slide sheared the forest — gets walked with a GPS unit. The runout angle gets shot with a clinometer from the toe of the debris. She counts rings on a snapped fir, dead at forty-one, and photographs the pale scars on the survivors, some of them a century old, each one a previous avalanche testifying from the witness stand. The chainsaw is for the trail of shattered timber between her and the data.

The snow melts and takes its testimony with it. The trees keep the transcript.

The antenna

Two days later she's two thousand feet higher, on a ridgeline in the wind, hiking a coil of cable and a new anemometer to a weather station that looks like a scarecrow assembled by engineers. Rime ice snapped the old propeller in February, and the station went dark for nine days — the nine days, it turned out, of the winter's biggest loading event. "I forecast that stretch blind," she says, filing corrosion off a contact. "Surgery by flashlight. Never again, if I can solder my way out of it." A marmot has eaten a foot of the solar panel's cable, which she notes in the maintenance log without editorializing, the way you'd log weather.

The center runs nine of these stations on a budget she describes as "two grants and a raffle." The replacement anemometer spent the spring on her kitchen table. When it's mounted and spinning she stands back and watches it the way some people watch a fire, then checks the telemetry on her phone: wind northwest at eleven. The ridge agrees. "That number," she says, "is the difference between me guessing and me knowing, some morning in January, whether a slope four miles from here is loaded."

The accounting

  • Remap three avalanche paths that ran farther this winter than in any year on record.
  • Rebuild the ridge anemometer before the October rime returns.
  • Code sixty-one reader-submitted near-miss reports into the database, anonymity guaranteed.
  • Rewrite the December facet chapter of the annual report — "without sounding like a told-you-so."
  • Teach two field courses and one classroom night at the community college.
  • Fix the truck.

The near-miss database is the part of the job she calls the real forecast. Sixty-one reports came in this season, from skiers and riders who got away with something and, remarkably, wrote it down. She reads each one twice: once for data — aspect, elevation, trigger, depth — and once for the sentence where the writer stops narrating and starts confessing. "There's always one sentence," she says. "It usually starts with we knew."

One report stays with her. A party skied the March 4 gully three days before it ran and filed an observation the same night: great powder, no signs of instability, stable on the test slope. "They weren't wrong," she says. "That's the horror of it. That layer let people be right about it for weeks. Then one day it stopped grading on a curve."

In the evenings she rows a battered drift boat on the lower Madison, which she considers occupational therapy at the molecular level. "Water tells you what it's doing," she says, leaning on the oars while Pica patrols the gravel bar. "It does everything out in front of you. Snow does everything in private, over months, and then shows you the answer once."

By late September the March fan will finally melt out; the three forecasters have five dollars each on the exact week. Then October, the erased whiteboard, the alarm reset to four, and several thousand strangers starting their mornings with her sentences again. Asked whether they listen, she gives the debris one last look and shrugs, less bitter than practiced. "The trees do."
