There is a bicycle hanging in the service bay of my local shop that has been there for eleven days. The twenty-minute job

This is the appliance model of ownership arriving on its last holdout. Your phone is glued shut. Your car is a software surface with cupholders. The bicycle was the last machine an ordinary person could completely understand — all of its reasoning on the outside, where every visible part was a learnable part. I learned to fix a flat at nine, on the curb outside a rented duplex, supervised by a retired machinist from two doors down who considered tire levers a moral failing. Thumbs only. By eleven I could true a wheel against a flipped frame with a zip tie for a gauge; by fourteen I was the kid other kids rolled their broken bikes to. None of that was talent. It was access — the bike showed you its whole argument, and you could test any clause of it with your hands. Multiply that curb by every town in the country and you have the actual talent pipeline of this sport. Not academies. Not power meters. Curbs.

The professional wrenches are not celebrating the sealed future either, whatever the catalogs imply. Buy the bike with the hoses you can see, and take the two watts on the chin — not because a visible hose is fixable at the roadside, but because it keeps the headset a twenty-minute job and your handlebar swap out of the bleed-kit economy. And while the option still exists, spec it with a cable-actuated drivetrain, because the cable is the part of the machine your hands can actually rescue. The payoff arrives later, in a gas-station parking lot with the wind coming up and forty miles still to ride, when the shifting goes ragged and you reach down, give the barrel adjuster half a turn, and feel the whole machine snap back into tune before the pump's receipt finishes printing.
